The Principle of Honor

Honor...Treating people as special, doing more than what's expected and having a good attitude.

This is the simple working definition our family uses when referring to the character trait of honor. Over the past few years at the beginning of each new year, we have assigned everyone in the family a character trait that we would emphasize and work on throughout the year. This year, we have assigned a single character trait to the entire family...HONOR. What a marvelous difference it has already made in the day to day life of our family.

The idea originally came from a wonderful book we stumbled across called "Say Goodbye to Whining, Complaining, and Bad Attitudes...in you and your kids!" by Dr. Scott Turansky and Joanne Miller, R.N. The major concept of the book is that if we build honor in our families, relationships with be healthier and our family will be blessed. The following is a quote from chapter two...

"Honor changes the way people think, the way we act, and the way we treat others. Honor motivates us as parents to treat our children differently. It gives children more constructive ways to interact with their parents. It helps siblings develop tolerance and patience. Honor builds a strong bond that, in turn, benefits all members of the family.

Honor adds that little bit of grace that transforms family life. It focuses on others and produces stronger relationships. It's not as concerned with protecting a reputation as it is with doing what's right. Honor is motivating and contagious and treats individuals as special. It brings joy to others but has a special reward for those who give it. Honor is like the oil in a machine, making it possible for the job to get done with less friction and less conflict."

We have been reading this book together as a family and it has been a delightful source of encouragement and insight. As much as each member has begun to grasp the concept of honor and attach it to their heart, Becker has truly made it his own. Honor is being shown on so many levels in the life of this precious young man. Today was a fabulous day for Becker! He truly treated people as special, did far more than was expected of him when doing a job and had a great attitude all day long. We give God all the praise and glory for the changes in Becker and look forward to the principle of honor being acted out in Becker's life on a daily basis, as well as in the rest our family.

"Honour all men. Love the brotherhood. Fear God." ~ 1 Peter 2:17

"Be kindly affectioned one to another with brotherly love; in honour preferring one another" ~ Romans 12:10
